101 (one-o-one)

The skills of electronics engineering and programming used to be exclusively a tool for engineers. However, nowadays it is developing more and more into a tool for designers to realize their dynamic and interactive design prototypes.

This eLab course project “101 (One-O-One)” covers the introduction to electronics and programming, to equip students with the basic skills necessary to create their own interactive design prototypes.
The course consists of hands-on workshops that cover:
- Electronics 101
- Arduino Programming 101
- Sensor/ Actuator 101
- Physical Computing 101 (Firmata + Processing)
- E-Textile 101

The course title “101” refers to the conventional American school naming system for first introductory courses. All of the workshops in the course will be aimed towards beginners without any previous experience; we will start from step one.

It is always necessary to practice repeatedly, and to become “good at” the technique you have just learned before you can feel comfortable using it. For the final project, all the students are asked to pick one technique introduced during the course, to repeat it again and again, and to develop it further on until it becomes a skill set. Students will be required to submit either a series of practice experiments or one complete project that reflects the skills they have obtained.
The aim of this course is to learn the basic electronics and programming skills and to familiarize themselves with them as a part of one's own design tools.
