Hinterm Wald // Ausstellung zur Berlin Art Week 2019

Die jährliche Ausstellung Hinterm Wald, die 2018 von der Künstlerin und Kuratorin AIKO SHIMOTSUMA ins Leben gerufen worden ist, erschließt besondere Orte künstlerisch. Zur Berlin Art Week vom 11.-15. September 2019 stellten für Hinterm Wald zwölf Künstlerinnen und Künstler ihre Arbeiten aus, die sie eigens für einen Ort entwickelten, dessen unkonventionelles Erscheinungsbild zugleich den konzeptuellen Rahmen der Ausstellung vorgab. Diese nunmehr zweite Ausstellung, die hier dokumentiert ist, kuratierte SHIMOTSUMA zusammen mit dem Philosophen FREDERIK WELLMANN.

Der KUNSTRAUM POTSDAMERSTRASSE verbindet die unterirdischen Decks eines verlassenen Parkhauses über einen Hof mit den Räumen eines ehemaligen Elektronikhandels. Auf den beiden weitläufigen Etagen des Parkhauses hat seit seiner Erbauung in den 70er Jahren nie ein Auto gestanden. Eine ungenügende Lüftungsanlage hatte die Anlage als Parkhaus unbrauchbar gemacht, bis seit kurzem Künstler diesen Ort für sich entdecken.

The annual exhibition series Hinterm Wald, launched in 2018 by artist and curator AIKO SHIMOTSUMA, artistically explores special places. During Berlin Art Week from September 11th-15th 2019, twelve artists exhibited works developed especially for the second edition of Hinterm Wald, in a location whose unconventional appearance also provided the conceptual framework for the exhibition. This exhibition was curated by SHIMOTSUMA together with the philosopher FREDERIK WELLMANN.

The KUNSTRAUM POTSDAMERSTRASSE connects the underground decks of an abandoned parking garage via a courtyard with the rooms of a former electronics store. Since its construction in the 70s, the two underground floors had never been in use. Due to an inadequate ventilation system, this part of the building was doomed to remain unusable, until its recent reoccupation by artists.
